Once upon a time, the official discontinuation of Kodachrome would have been immediately followed by a large and vocal uprising; at least among certain circles [namely, photographers]. However, it seems that Old Yellow managed to quietly put this icon to rest without so much as a whimper uttered inside these walls. This gentle passing and the even gentler response is just another sign that we are indeed living in a digital world.
By coincidence, analog television broadcasting was laid to rest two weeks prior to Kodachrome’s demise. Like Kodachrome analog VHF TV has its roots in the decade before WWII. But unlike the iconic film, the passing of analog TV has caused quite a stir and inconvenience to many. [I, for one, will miss being able to tune-in 6ABC on my FM dial.]
For better or worse, digital technology continues its push into our daily routine; and thus, perhaps solidifying film’s fate as an art medium. Click responsibly.

Welcome Holga. The latest film camera to hit our shelves is, ironically, the oldest in design. Holga remains a constant in a field where the next best thing is often trite by the time it hits the market.
So, what is it about this simple, plastic product that makes it so appealing to so many? Certainly, part of its charm can be found in the question itself: simple plastic. Holga leaves much to chance. And in so doing, plays as much of a role in the final image as the subject and the photographer.
In this digital world it is nice to know that some folks remain dedicated to film. Count us among them (even as we continue to devour every technological breakthrough in the industry)!

Late last year we started receiving frequent requests for the Flip Mino video camera. For those unfamiliar with this product it is about the size of a cell phone and has a built-in USB connection that flips out [hence, the name] from the camera itself for downloading the video. Gadget freaks were nuts for the thing, but we w
ere unimpressed. The video quality is mediocre at best, comparable to that of a compact point-and-shoot digital still camera’s. And it lacks a memory slot. That means, once the limited built-in memory is full you must download or delete to keep shooting.
As for the ease of download which every reviewer raved about, there is nothing different in its computer interface than nearly every other digital camera on the market. Plug it in and let Windows take over.
But the success of the Flip got the attention of the big guys. The first to hit the market was Sony with the Webbie HD. The Webbie features a rotating lens and accepts Memory Stick Pro Duo cards. The Sony also sells for about $30 less than the Flip.
So, hats off to the Mino for being a trend-setter. But without the ability to accept memory cards it is unlikely to survive as the market gets more crowded.

Almost immediately after digital cameras found their way into our hands, we photographers started looking for a device to safely backup our pix while we were away from home-base. Now, years later, the search is finally over. The solution has been found in a new breed of mini laptops.
Yes, there have been some promising devices along the way. Nikon’s CoolWalker had a 2.5″ screen, 30 GB drive, and a suggested retail price of $599. Epson had perhaps the most success in the market with their P-series of portable storage devices (PSD). Their middle-of-the-road offering, the P-4000, was fully equipped with an 80 GB drive, 3.8″ LCD screen, and also retailed for around $600 bucks at its debut. Besides being expensive, both the CoolWalker and the P-4000 were criticized for being slow and incompatible with popular file formats [The faster of the two, the P-4000, requires about four minutes to download 0.5 GB of data from a high-speed CompactFlash memory card!].

It became clear to us at The Camera Shop that with their high price tags and limited capabilities, PSD’s were best passed-up in favor of an entry-level laptop. This is what we reluctantly told our customers when they asked for such a device… until now.
The latest incarnation of the laptop is a diminutive device collectively referred to as a netbook. Under three pounds, these little guys pack everything the photographer has been asking for. Lots of storage? Check. Beautiful screen to show off images? Check. Fast download? Check. Able to show ANY file format out there, video or still? Check!
Now, for the gravy… Fast wi-fi, ethernet, three USB ports, two internal SD readers, external monitor/projector hook-up, and a 5-hour battery life! This is a computer, after all.
For the needs of the photographer, our customer, we carry the top-rated Acer Aspire One, pretested and customized. And just like with our cameras, lifetime support is included.

The portable storage device is dead. It won’t be missed.
